BSIF Membership: 3 Goals for Safer UK PPE | Seamless Source

Table of Contents

BSIF membership marks an important step for Seamless Source. We are pleased to announce that we have joined the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF).

BSIF is the UK trade association for the safety industry, bringing together manufacturers, importers, distributors, test houses, certification bodies and specialist service providers. It supports the sector through industry representation, guidance and initiatives focused on keeping people safe.

For us, joining is a starting point for closer collaboration and a longer-term commitment to helping modernise the UK PPE industry. You can find Seamless Source in the official BSIF member directory.

THE CHALLENGE

Connecting the information behind every product

In PPE, incorrect product information can put someone's life at risk.

Consider clothing intended to protect a worker against the thermal hazards of an electric arc. Its protection claims need appropriate testing and evidence for the materials and garment concerned. Standards such as IEC 61482-2 address those requirements and test methods.

If testing has not been completed, or evidence belongs to a different product version, the claimed protection may be unsupported. If an incorrect protection rating reaches a distributor or customer, someone could select clothing that is unsuitable for the hazard.

An arc flash can generate intense heat and cause severe burns within a very short time. Electrical incidents can cause life-changing injuries or death. The consequences extend to the worker's family and future, long after an information error is discovered.

That is why specifications, testing, certification evidence and product descriptions need to remain connected. Effective PPE compliance management depends on teams being able to identify what has been tested, which product version the evidence covers and what claims are approved for use.

OUR APPROACH

Making technology useful in everyday work

When product records sit across separate systems, spreadsheets and email chains, teams spend valuable time checking versions and passing updates between departments.

Our Product Relationship Management approach centres on one connected record per product, linking information with suppliers, supporting documents and activities throughout its lifecycle.

The aim is to make approved information easier to maintain, changes easier to track and gaps easier to identify. Technology should help people carry out their responsibilities with greater visibility and less repetitive administration.

LEARNING & COLLABORATING

How BSIF membership supports learning and collaboration

Meaningful change starts with understanding the industry's needs.

Through our BSIF membership, we look forward to learning from organisations across the safety supply chain and contributing our experience in product data management.

We want to understand where information becomes disconnected and where collaboration could improve how businesses work. These relationships will help inform our approach as we build connections with industry partners in the UK and internationally.

WHY IT MATTERS

Better information supports safer decisions

Reliable product information helps businesses understand protection levels, limitations and the evidence behind a product's claims.

Traceable supplier records and accessible documentation can also help teams investigate inconsistencies and questionable claims, supporting wider efforts against counterfeit and non-compliant products.

This work sits alongside testing, supplier checks and enforcement. Our contribution is to help make the information supporting those activities clearer, more connected and easier to check.

LOOKING AHEAD

Our five-year plan for the UK PPE industry

Our BSIF membership is part of a longer-term commitment to the UK safety industry. Over the next five years, we intend to focus our contribution on three priorities.

1. Improve data management efficiency and support stronger margins

We want to help PPE businesses reduce repeated data entry, document chasing and the rework caused by inconsistent information.

Connecting product, supplier and compliance records can help teams manage larger product ranges without increasing administration at the same pace. Our goal is to help businesses reduce avoidable operating costs, use their expertise more effectively and strengthen their margins.

2. Strengthen global tender readiness through transparency and circularity

We aim to help UK PPE businesses present clearer, evidence-backed information to international buyers and respond more efficiently to global tenders.

This includes improving access to product specifications, traceability and relevant circularity information. Digital Product Passports can support this direction by making product information accessible in a structured digital format, including information about materials, repair, reuse and recycling where relevant.

We want to help businesses demonstrate what makes their products suitable and credible, supporting their ability to compete internationally and contributing to a stronger UK presence in the global PPE market.

3. Bring practical AI into PPE business operations

We plan to integrate advances in AI into everyday product and business workflows, from extracting supplier information and identifying missing records to preparing reports and supporting updates.

Our focus will be on useful applications built around reliable data, with human review and approval where decisions affect safety or compliance.

By making these technologies more accessible and practical, we aim to support modernisation across the UK PPE industry.
