Digital product passport explained
What is a digital product passport?
A digital product passport (DPP) is a digital record of a product’s materials, origin, compliance and end-of-life information, opened by scanning a data carrier on the product. The EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) makes DPPs mandatory category by category, starting with batteries on 18 February 2027.
- Who needs one
- Brands, manufacturers and importers placing regulated products on the EU market.
- What it holds
- Composition, supply chain, certificates, environmental impact, repair and recycling.
- Where it is registered
- The EU Digital Product Passport Registry, live since 20 July 2026.

How a digital product passport works
From product ID to a passport anyone can scan, in four steps.
- Step 1IdentifyEach product gets a persistent ID, such as a GS1 Digital Link web address.
- Step 2CollectSupplier, material and certificate evidence is linked to that ID.
- Step 3PublishThe passport goes live, with access rights for shoppers, partners and authorities.
- Step 4ScanA QR code, NFC or RFID tag on the product opens the passport.
Why is a digital product passport hard to build without DPP software?
A passport is only as good as the evidence behind it. Today that evidence sits with suppliers, in PDFs and inboxes.
“Where did this fabric come from?”
Tier 1 is known. The mill and fibre behind it are not, and certificates expire unnoticed.
“Which rules apply, and when?”
Batteries, detergents, toys and textiles each have their own passport rules and dates.
“Can we prove that claim?”
A green claim without supplier evidence is now a legal and reputational risk.

What is a digital product passport?
A digital product passport (DPP) is a digital record for a product, opened by scanning a QR code, NFC tag or RFID tag on the product. It shares information such as materials, origin, certifications, environmental impact, repair and recycling, with different parts visible to shoppers, business partners and authorities.
When do digital product passports become mandatory?
Category by category. Battery passports apply from 18 February 2027 under the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, detergent passports from 23 September 2029 under Regulation (EU) 2026/405, and toy passports from 1 August 2030 under the Toy Safety Regulation (EU) 2025/2509. Under ESPR, the 2025–2030 working plan prioritises iron and steel (2026), textiles and tyres (2027), aluminium (2027), furniture (2028) and mattresses (2029). These are indicative adoption years; rules apply at least 18 months after each act.
Are digital product passports mandatory for textiles yet?
Not yet. The EU textiles delegated act under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 is planned for adoption in 2027, and its passport rules apply at least 18 months after it takes effect. Supplier evidence takes months to gather, so brands that start now avoid a rush.
Do toys need a digital product passport?
Yes. From 1 August 2030, the Toy Safety Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 requires a digital product passport for every toy, replacing the EU declaration of conformity. It holds the toy’s unique identifier, the manufacturer’s details, the EU laws the toy complies with and a reference to the service provider holding a back-up copy.
Do PPE products need a digital product passport?
Not yet as a dedicated requirement: PPE is not on the first ESPR working plan (2025–2030). Many PPE brands already use a passport to share certificates, such as EN 388 test results and CE or UKCA declarations, with buyers and distributors.
Is a digital product passport just a QR code?
No. The QR code, NFC tag or RFID tag is only the data carrier. The passport is the structured, verified product data behind it, with access rights for each audience, kept up to date for the product’s lifetime.
Can I see an example of a digital product passport?
Yes. Open our live example passport for an industrial impact glove, built on Seamless Source, to see the overview, compliance, supply chain and usage tabs.
What information goes into a Seamless Source passport?
Material composition, a supply chain map with the country and city of each step, component-level traceability, factory certifications such as GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Sedex and ISO, carbon, water and energy figures, care instructions, and repair, resale and recycling routes. Exact fields follow the rules that apply to each product.
Who can see what in a passport?
You choose per field. Shoppers see a public view, business partners such as retailers and recyclers see more, and authorities can see the full evidence. Commercially sensitive supplier details stay out of the public view.
Which standards is Seamless Source DPP built on?
Seamless Source DPP is built to the EU ESPR technical specification, GS1 Digital Link for product identifiers and the UN Transparency Protocol (UNTP) for data exchange.
Which data carriers can we use?
QR codes printed on care labels or swing tags, NFC tags sewn in or heat-sealed for premium products, and RFID tags stitched in for bulk scanning in warehouses and rental. We agree the right carrier and placement with your design and technical teams.
What is the EU Digital Product Passport Registry?
A central Commission registry that went live on 20 July 2026. It records passport identifiers and key metadata; the passport data itself stays with the brand and is reached through the data carrier on the product.
What does ESPR require of digital product passport software?
Under ESPR Articles 10 and 11, a passport must link the data carrier to a persistent unique product identifier, use open and interoperable data without vendor lock-in, give each stakeholder group the right access, keep a back-up copy with an independent DPP service provider, stay available after an insolvency, and have its identifiers registered in the EU registry.
What are the harmonised standards for digital product passports?
Six EN standards, EN 18216, EN 18219, EN 18220, EN 18221, EN 18222 and EN 18223, were cited in the Official Journal on 15 July 2026. They cover identifiers, data carriers, storage, interoperability, data exchange and the passport API, and give a presumption of conformity with ESPR Articles 10 and 11.
Does a digital product passport need blockchain?
No. The European Commission has said ESPR is technology-neutral: no specific technology is favoured or excluded. What matters is that the passport meets the ESPR rules and the delegated act for your product.
Is there an ESPR-certified DPP platform?
Not yet. ESPR lets the Commission set requirements and a possible certification scheme for DPP service providers, which it plans for 2027. Until then, ask any provider which standards it follows and how it meets ESPR Articles 10 and 11.
Does Seamless Source support PPWR packaging data?
Yes. Packaging data for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sits on the same product record as your passport, so it is entered once and reused.
Does a passport make our products compliant on its own?
No. A passport presents verified information. The company placing the product on the market stays responsible for the accuracy of that information and for meeting each product rule. Seamless Source helps you hold the evidence and publish it correctly.
How long does implementation take?
4 to 8 weeks for most teams. We map your products, migrate supplier, material and certificate data, and set up your passports with you.
What is the implementation guarantee?
If your passports are not live within the timeline agreed at kickoff, you get 100% of the implementation fee back, provided supplier and product data arrive on schedule. See the guarantee terms.
We already have a PIM or PLM. Do we need to replace it?
No. Seamless Source DPP works alongside your existing systems. Many teams use it for the supplier evidence, certificates and passport publishing their current tools were not built for.
Do we need PIM or PLM as well?
No. Start with Digital Product Passports and add modules when you are ready. All modules share one record per product, so nothing is migrated twice. There is no lock-in.
Who is Seamless Source DPP for?
Fashion, PPE, toy and home furnishing brands with £5M+ annual revenue, 10+ employees, 100+ active SKUs and 5+ suppliers.
How secure is our data, and what if we leave?
Role-based access, multi-factor authentication, daily backups and UK-based, GDPR-compliant servers. You own your data and can export product records, certificates, passport content and supplier data in standard formats at any time. See the Security Center.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on your modules and number of products. See pricing and the ROI calculator.
